Hong Qin’s Research Contributions

Hong Qin has made fundamental research contributions in several areas of geometric modeling and physics-based simulation. Here we mention his key contributions in D-NURBS, B-splines/NURBS, and dynamic simulation, among others:

D-NURBS: Integrating Geometry and Physics
During his doctoral studies at the University of Toronto, Hong Qin, under the mentorship of his advisor Demetri Terzopoulos, explored the integration of B-splines/NURBS with physics-based modeling and dynamic simulation. This led to the development of D-NURBS, a significant advancement that bridges the gap between geometry and physics-based methods. His work laid the foundation for further research in the field.

B-splines and NURBS in Physics-Based Modeling
Brian Barsky, during his seminars at the Dynamic Graphics Project (DGP) Lab at the University of Toronto, introduced Hong Qin to advanced concepts in B-splines and NURBS, which became fundamental to Qin’s research in integrating geometry with dynamic simulation.

Collaborations in Geometric Modeling and Computer Graphics
Following his doctoral studies, Hong Qin became an active participant in numerous conferences related to geometric modeling and computer graphics, including his involvement in shaping the early foundations of the Symposium on Solid and Physical Modeling (now SPM).

Leadership in the Field
Throughout his career, Hong Qin has chaired numerous conferences and made substantial contributions to the advancement of geometric modeling and computing. He has also served on editorial boards of various prestigious journals and supervised many students in the field.
